Trouble at City Hall
Read: 1 Corinthians 11:17-34
Who ever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in and unworthy
manner will be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.
Wreckers preparing to care down a burned out bakery in Troy, Illinois,
accidentally made a big impression on City Hall right next door. A65-ton
crane back into the government building, creating a huge hole in the front
wall. According to a supervisor, the crane operator "was just being
careless."
This accident reminds me of what happened church in ancient Corinth. By
being self-absorbed in careless with the bread in the wind of the Lord's
table, some church members back into big trouble. Their failure to honor it
the sanctity of the ceremony dishonored the memory of Christ's sacrifice.
Many believers paid for their mistake the loss of health for even their life
(1 Corinthians 11:30).
Paul urged the Corinthians to judge themselves so they would not be judged
(verses 28, 31). And he pointed out that even the Lord's judgment was for
their benefit. (Verse 32).
The Lord's table will remain an opportunity and a danger on till He comes.
By the attitude of our hearts, we will either honor His death do damage to
His name.
Before you celebrate the Lord's supper, prayerfully examine yourself. Then,
with a heart of gratitude, focus on His sacrifice for you.-Mart D. Haan
I pause, and in a fresh honesty confess
The sins I try to hide but Christ can see;
And then, in holy hush I taste the meal
And gratefully recall His death for me. - Gustafson
Thought for the day: Only those who take sin seriously can remember Christ's
greatfully.
